Hot Fuzz

[:

[00:00:07] Chris: was very, very tight and

[:

[00:00:14] Sherry: That's like Ricky Bobby, he's covering his bases. Yeah, same with

[:

[00:00:20] James: and say it, Phil.

[:

[00:00:22] Sherry: trailer. It's like, once you start it, it's like, Okay, I gotta see

[:

[00:00:29] Chris: this [00:00:30] is going. Yeah, I like the setup of the movie

[:

[00:00:38] James: That's a, that's an emotional swing for 24, 48 hours.

[:

[00:00:58] Phil: I don't know. We'll [00:01:00] see. Both in tone and style. Both about cops though, so maybe that is our link. Before we get in, of course, we want to do our notable quotables. All right, so let's, uh, start that with, uh, Sherry's bumper.

[:

[00:01:26] Sherry: James. [00:01:30] You had said something one time when I was, you know, choosing lines and they would be like just one word or two words or something.

[:

[00:01:42] Sherry: so, and you also said something about doing accents on when we were

[:

[00:01:51] Sherry: yeah, the common breath.

[:

[00:02:02] Chris: and I go down

[:

[00:02:09] Chris: All of these are from the same movie? No. No. Okay. Gotcha.

[:

[00:02:15] Sherry: It's three words, but it's probably the hardest. But if you've seen this movie as many times as I have and my brother has, you, you may recognize it. And there's also, I think a meme or something out there. Are you ready? [00:02:30] Yes. Hey, it's three words. All right. Okay. Show me.

[:

[00:02:41] Sherry: Horror movie. Twilight Zone. What? Twilight Zone? No, Christine. No, but I know what you're, yeah. The Twilight Zone where he's like, no, you wanna see something scary. You wanna see some really scary,

[:

[00:02:55] Sherry: banged up and he says, okay, show me.

[:

[00:03:08] Sherry: all. I mean, I'm, I'm like, yeah, my brother would know

[:

[00:03:15] James: Yeah. I love that. Scary. I know. Shocked the hell out

[:

[00:03:21] Sherry: And he turns the lights out. Yeah. I like that. Okay. The next one is two words, but you'll get it as soon as I say it. Well, [00:03:30] we'll see. Okay. They're here.

[:

[00:03:34] Phil: Yes. Yeah. That was good.

[:

[00:03:39] Sherry: Oh my

[:

[00:03:42] Sherry: Let me see if I can say it. Hello.

[:

[00:03:55] Sherry: Well, I just thought, well, if you can get one

[:

[00:03:59] Phil: were hard. [00:04:00] That first one was a reach. I was, I liked it. Yeah. That's crazy. Wow. That was the best yet.

[:

[00:04:11] James: This was, this was my pick, by the way. Oh yes, Blade

[:

[00:04:18] James: Fuzz is one of the movies that I think of as a perfect movie. Oh yes. It is a Perfectly written, acted, directed, easter eggs everywhere, little things [00:04:30] you can pick up on the 700th time you've watched it.

[:

[00:04:33] Phil: it right now, you know. It's a great, great, great movie. Shaun of the Dead is also very good, but Hot Fuzz is always on. I could always watch it. This is part of

[:

[00:04:50] Phil: world's end.

[:

[00:04:55] James: cream, the ice cream cones. Yeah. It's a British thing or England and [00:05:00] yeah. So it's the cornetto trilogy. So in Shaun of the dead, he eats red cornettos. And this one, they're eating blue cornettos and in world's end, which is not as good as those two, in my opinion, I've

[:

[00:05:11] Phil: Now, do you think it's like, is it red for the blood of zombies and blue for the police or possibly? Yeah,

[:

[00:05:18] Phil: I don't know what green would be. Okay. And what's the

[:

[00:05:29] Sherry: [00:05:30] Goes protocol. Yeah, yeah.

[:

[00:05:32] Sherry: Benji shows up. Yes. And I'm so glad he continues to be in the Yeah, no,

[:

[00:05:38] James: Yeah. He's He's also in the boys. Yep. Is

[:

[00:05:44] James: dad. Yeah. Huey's dad.

[:

[00:05:46] Chris: Hall and

[:

[00:05:49] Phil: Was he Scotty and Star in Star Trek for a while? Yep. Yeah. Yep. That's him

[:

[00:06:03] Phil: Edgar Wright. Is that

[:

[00:06:06] Phil: done.

[:

[00:06:09] James: done. Shaun of the Dead. Last Night in Soho. World's End. Scott Pilgrim. Yeah. Just hang on. There's so many more. Yeah. Last Night in Soho was a good one. Baby Driver. Fantastic. Okay. Hot Fuzz. Yeah. Those are the ones here lately.

[:

[00:06:27] Phil: Yeah. Was it? Prime maybe or [00:06:30] one of the streaming channels and it was really good and it got cancelled and I was Devastated because it was huh? I like him a lot. Oh, no, he was amazing in it It was great, but it didn't last I was disappointed about that. Yeah, definitely like that All right, anything else before we get into the money crates fans?

[:

[00:06:47] James: said my piece on how I think this movie's

[:

[00:07:01] Phil: hot fuzz, tomato score, 91 percent critics, 89 percent audience favorability. I would have liked to have seen the audience a little higher. I think it probably is higher because of how good I think this movie is. So I think those are a little, I'd like to see those reversed almost. But high marks across the board.

[:

[00:07:30] James: 8 million estimated.

[:

[00:07:35] James: would imagine if it's an 8 million with budgeting for advertisement and stuff, touring, that probably puts it up there at 16.

[:

[00:07:46] Phil: Either way. It absolutely made its money back domestic release 23 million international 56 million for a total worldwide of 80 million dollars this movie and I think that is probably pretty accurate [00:08:00] is longer than I would have anticipated. It seems longer than this, but they're calling it 2 hours in 1 minute.

[:

[00:08:23] James: I rated this movie as a 10 on IMDb. It's one of the three movies

[:

[00:08:29] Phil: Full 10. Yeah. [00:08:30] I never get tired of it. I mean, I'll watch it and I just, I'm in for the whole show, man. You know, it's, it's.

[:

[00:08:41] Phil: And I, we'll get to it when we get to it, but I think it has one of the, yeah, I think it has one of the greatest shootouts in all of cinema.

[:

[00:08:48] Sherry: and it, it, it's one of those movies, you know, like the burbs or something, it's comedy with horror mixed in and that's, I

[:

[00:09:06] James: hero in his own regard.

[:

[00:09:11] Phil: do. It's fantastic. All right. All right. We'll get into this. I have, we have a lot of notes, theme state and all that. So let's get into the beats if there's nothing else. And we'll start breaking this down.

[:

[00:09:48] Phil: That's his name. Yeah. Uh, angle, angle, angle, right. Yes. That's what I'm talking about. Yes, absolutely. No nonsense, walking fast with a [00:10:00] purpose. Laser like focus, perfectly attuned to his environment. Later it will be stated that it's only ever about the job. It's all he cares about. His ex girlfriend claims he is already married to the force.

[:

[00:10:32] James: Yeah, it kind of shows you a metropolitan police and he kind of goes through all of his skills and

[:

[00:10:43] Phil: Yeah. Yeah. And that look to the camera is always. And he plays it straight, like he, you can't make that a joke. He plays it straight and it's ten times funny. That's funny, you know. Yeah, I mean,

[:

[00:10:58] Chris: He's also like, [00:11:00] good at it, right? Like, like the one note I wrote was super cop, you know? Yeah,

[:

[00:11:10] Chris: Which I didn't catch that the first time I watched it, I don't know why. I even wrote the word super cop in my own notes and then fucking super cop movie shows up later.

[:

[00:11:17] Phil: shit. Duh. Yeah. No, this, it, it, it parodies perfectly. The, uh, buddy action drama, right, trope, you know, and it doesn't go overboard. It is, it's, it's, it's [00:11:30] totally perfectly on tone to, to, to, to sort of send off these, these action comedies. So the setup I have is basically one minute. To three minutes, 19 seconds, as James was saying, he's basically the human terminator, highest arrest record, nine commendations in the last year.

[:

[00:12:07] Phil: Any other thoughts on the setup? I think we're given a pretty good setup. I think the, just

[:

[00:12:18] Phil: We're, we're given a very quick picture of who this guy is. Yeah.

[:

[00:12:25] Phil: The catalyst is being

[:

[00:12:28] Phil: because he's overachieving.

[:

[00:12:45] Phil: It's Gloucestershire. Oh, now that's the proper Queen's English ugly Americans say Gloucestershire the country basically is what it is. Gotcha. Now there is more setup than just that because again, he goes talk to his girlfriend [00:13:00] and it's, it's the, it's the, the service now, not the four. So, so there is extensive setup as we get a glimpse of how serious.

[:

[00:13:17] James: the other one was, no, of course I wouldn't be dating Bob. I'm dating the other guy. Hello there.

[:

[00:13:26] Phil: He's just so impressive. Yeah. Hello there. Hello there. [00:13:30] But they're all dressed

[:

[00:13:35] Phil: Uh, so that's essentially the setup to Catalyst. I think we all agree this is being made sergeant in the country. Now, there is a serious debate.

[:

[00:14:01] Phil: I like

[:

[00:14:08] Phil: in the other room. Yeah. You want me to call the chief

[:

[00:14:13] Chris: Yeah, this guy is Those three guys, Martin Freeman, Bill Nye, and I don't remember the other guy's name. Oh, Jesus. Hang on. And having those three. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You couldn't have got three

[:

[00:14:25] James: other guys that's in the Ricky Gervais

[:

[00:14:29] Phil: The tall, the tall [00:14:30] one, right? Tall fella. Yeah, yeah. Mm hmm. No, that's Steven

[:

[00:14:34] Phil: swan guy. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're right, you're right, you're right. It's a swan. It's a swan.

[:

[00:14:42] Phil: swan.

[:

[00:14:44] Chris: find him.

[:

[00:14:49] Phil: Yes. So

[:

[00:14:59] Phil: Oh, [00:15:00] this is, it's too fun. All right. Break into two. So I have it around eight. Now the break into two, your transition from the first to the second act can be one second, or it can be a transition. And I think here it's, it's quite their transition. I have it from eight, 17. To 10, 30, 10 minutes, 30 seconds. Two taxis, several trains a bus to get 'em across the threshold and into the special world of Act two, which is Sanford Gloucestershire in the country.

[:

[00:15:43] Phil: Yes, and I think, I think some of this is accelerated because of the amount of fun and games in this movie, which I have quite a lot. Yes. Yes. Any other thoughts? He's got his peace lily with him. Right. He's traveling. [00:16:00] Any other thoughts on that? I think it's, like I said, I think they get us there quickly.

[:

[00:16:07] James: It does a lot of shots of his cell phone and the bars and his signal. Yes.

[:

[00:16:13] James: have bars. No, I don't have bars now. I have like one or two bars. No, it's nothing like he's going out into the country. So

[:

[00:16:28] Phil: So about eight hours and 22 [00:16:30] minutes. Total travel time to cross the threshold, which he completes by walking through the door of the Swan Hotel. So essentially that, that train ride, all those things took about eight hours to get from London to Gloucestershire. What was the second time? It goes from 1430 to 2052.

[:

[00:17:08] Phil: Is that right? Six. Yeah. Anyway, long time. To get out to basically nowhere, he gets into the swan hotel. You

[:

[00:17:27] James: be.

[:

[00:17:30] Phil: Maybe that's an old title or. Yeah. Or do you mean like a mistake?

[:

[00:17:36] Phil: best Western and the best Western made it. Part of their hotel chain, but kept the name or whatever. That's

[:

[00:17:48] Phil: I don't, I don't know. I don't know what they do.

[:

[00:17:54] Sherry: It's Yeah, yeah.

[:

[00:18:04] Chris: that is clearly downtown

[:

[00:18:05] Phil: Yeah, right. Sure. He completes the crossing of the threshold by walking through the door of the Swan Hotel. All right. So he has crossed the threshold once he gets to the hotel. Now, I don't know what to make of this and maybe nothing. He gets to the hotel and the clerk Which I have her name down here somewhere.

[:

[00:18:27] Chris: I'm gonna

[:

[00:18:30] Phil: IMDB is driving me nuts. Yeah, yeah, hold on. Joyce Cooper? No? Joyce Cooper's husband? Who's the Cause I wrote down all the characters cause I wanted to keep them straight. Owner of the pub, husband of the pub, chief of police, private Joyce Cooper. Yes.

[:

[00:18:47] James: Yeah, that's the owner of the

[:

[00:19:06] Phil: Mm hmm. Is there any connections that we're making or just the creepiness? I think it's just the

[:

[00:19:14] Phil: elements in this. Yes, but we're about to go down a rabbit hole of darkness later on. Yeah, so I'm sure there's an

[:

[00:19:22] Chris: To The

[:

[00:19:23] James: she calls him fascist and

[:

[00:19:41] Phil: Now, the fun and games, I have a 1033 dash. Basically, essentially, the bulk of the movie. I have a lot of fun and games, I believe. Really? I think so. I

[:

[00:19:58] Phil: Okay. Because I have a Yes, I [00:20:00] have a Fairly early when he gets off the final cab or whatever and enters the hotel, but that's it at like 10 minutes.

[:

[00:20:09] James: it at when,

[:

[00:20:15] James: are murdered. Yes. When the first murders start to happen.

[:

[00:20:20] Chris: So you had, I thought initially that's what it was, but yeah, but his call or his catalyst right is, is getting promoted and sent out here in the, yeah, [00:20:30] it's definitely the fun and games is the super cop in this boring, seemingly boring town, right?

[:

[00:20:52] Phil: the murders and stuff

[:

[00:20:53] James: But usually all the, all the characters are introduced in the first act. Yes. So you haven't met anybody [00:21:00] that's going to be in the movie yet. Right.

[:

[00:21:11] Chris: has to be, you don't always meet all the characters in the first act, right?

[:

[00:21:26] Phil: the upside down characters of the special world.

[:

[00:21:29] Chris: [00:21:30] doesn't meet Tin Man and Lion and

[:

[00:21:37] Chris: As far as that design goes, yeah. But other stuff, yeah, you can meet everybody.

[:

[00:21:45] Chris: probably meet everybody, you know?

[:

[00:21:48] Phil: sure, because this doesn't become an ensemble piece until he gets to the second act because he's a lone man, you know, he's right. And that's a good point. That's part of his problem. Good point. He can't [00:22:00] shut off. He's making. Yeah. He's unique. Anyway, fun and games starts. It arguably could be made James point because that's traditionally where it happens after the first murder in detective stories.

[:

[00:22:31] Phil: That's where I have a start. And like I said, I think there's a lot. The theme stated, and again, this is always interesting to me, what did you all have as the theme stated? For the greater good. Okay. Mm hmm. Yeah. Okay. I have that as well. Here, I think we get the theme. Shut it. At least the argument of the film.

[:

[00:23:08] Phil: Yeah. They pretty much said that. No,

[:

[00:23:13] Phil: So I was confused. No, no, no. Right. Okay. He was making the other shoddy and lazy policing look bad. By contrast. We will find out later. That the greater good here is vigilantism, taking the law into one's own hands, either by profiting from underage drinking or by extreme [00:23:30] enforcement by civilians.

[:

[00:23:51] Phil: That's what he calls the law. Procedural correctness in the execution of unquestionable moral authority. And that, and that, and it has to be [00:24:00] moral and it has to be authority, but it has to be totally moral versus this willy nilly vigilantism, which you can exercise for whatever purpose you.

[:

[00:24:12] Phil: the greater good, as far as you see it, and that's what they will eventually say about greater good.

[:

[00:24:28] Sherry: hear the greater good [00:24:30] out in public, I go the greater

[:

[00:24:39] Phil: The greater good versus the laws of the law into the proper execution of the law. All right. Yeah.

[:

[00:25:00] Phil: And then he asked, so you're 47 or whatever it is.

[:

[00:25:29] Phil: Roper, I [00:25:30] think A. Roper, I don't have anything written down for him, so I think he was, was he the YARP guy? No. No, that was Michael. Michael, yeah, who's A. Roper? We don't ever learn his job, apparently, or else I didn't write it down. I'm looking, I'm looking. We'll figure it out. Jay Reaper, James Reaper, farmer, owns Brannigan Farm.

[:

[00:26:10] Phil: Some of them are. Most of them are, I think. Yeah. I was thinking

[:

[00:26:15] Phil: steroids of the town because they want, they always want to be town of the year, village of the year or whatever. But I think, I think they are most of the city council and the vigilantes at, okay. Now at 11 minutes and six seconds, his future partner receives a pint.[00:26:30]

[:

[00:26:34] James: Another pint of lager. Yeah. Lager

[:

[00:26:52] Phil: I don't think I caught that first time, but you're looking at the paper and the headline is about this bypass.

[:

[00:27:06] Phil: we can watch it now and pick up stuff, like you were saying.

[:

[00:27:35] Phil: So on their website, they acknowledge the crown at Wells, but are very proud to point out that the interiors were shot in their pub, not the other. So if you're ever in. Beaconsfield, Bruckingshire, go to that pub and you will see the interiors. The Royal Stanford, the Royal Standard of England, [00:28:00] and there's the website, but anyway.

[:

[00:28:06] James: No, he was down on those beers pretty quick, and Sgt. Angel's always can't turn it off, he's drinking cranberry

[:

[00:28:22] James: Yeah, he's he's not doing too well his first night in this new

[:

[00:28:27] Phil: Already has a high rest record B [00:28:30] story. I say started 1336 now the B story has to be Danny Butterman Yes. Yep. Yeah. Yes. All right. I call it the meet cute because traditionally it's essentially a bromance at this point much like Our buddy cop

[:

[00:28:48] James: I would not be surprised if they were on a full relationship after the movie ended. Yeah, they're like, yeah, they're just, this. The relationship that they gathered with each other was right. It's a [00:29:00] loving relationship.

[:

[00:29:26] Chris: lists all the founders or whatever,

[:

[00:29:30] Phil: Essentially, yes. Most of those are the vigilantes and town council. Yeah, it was about 12 people or so.

[:

[00:29:47] Phil: car comes smashing into it.

[:

[00:29:56] James: to get out of the way. Right.

[:

[00:30:00] Chris: I don't think all smashed up or anything, but he does smash into the.

[:

[00:30:05] James: new things.

[:

[00:30:24] James: if you want to stop and

[:

[00:30:26] Phil: Uh, D. Mower, the one whose birthday was in 1969. [00:30:30] There's a P. Slater, which we don't have anything about him. And a G. Carter, the one who had glasses and yelped when Angel asked him his age. Simon Skinner introduces himself with Now, now, there's all this double entendre from Simon Skinner. Simon Skinner introduces himself with a menacing double entendre, talking about slashing prices, but his confession to being a criminal is not necessarily the joke it seems.

[:

[00:31:13] Phil: So, uh, there is this fun double entendre about, about hiding in plain sight almost, as you learn about these people. Because he is a slasher. Frank Butterman is a bit of a Wild West nut. Does this, now this is just a rhetorical question, but does this feed into his affinity to [00:31:30] Wild West justice, a. k. a.

[:

[00:31:47] James: just so far away that he was taking things into his own hands

[:

[00:31:54] Phil: Well, geogra and this is a typical angel answer. Geographical isolation shouldn't factor in the enforcement of the law. [00:32:00] It's the same law everywhere. Hardcore here, hardcore there. Now, did some okay, so Sergeant Popwell. There was references to him disappearing, or as I wrote down, did something happen to him?

[:

[00:32:13] Chris: yeah, because he's down at the, with the gypsies and the rest of them. He was

[:

[00:32:23] Phil: And the kids down there and, right. Jugglers were up for a nuts and jugglers. Yes, [00:32:30] uh, now he takes a tour of the station and I did write this down because I thought it was funny. The curse jar. Yeah, and the charges for the different curses. Apparently 10 pence if you say knob Bastard 20 pence shit 50 pence a whole pound for the word fuck and I'm not even gonna say this word the C word Two pounds.

[:

[00:33:07] James: Well, you could put like the

[:

[00:33:12] Phil: So even they acknowledge it's a heavy hitter. Two whole pounds for proceeds go to the restoration of the church roof. All right.

[:

[00:33:26] Chris: just desserts, right? Oh, yeah, yeah,

[:

[00:33:28] Chris: yeah. So, it's just So, [00:33:30] yeah, I don't guess I've got that.

[:

[00:33:41] Phil: apparently they find Nobody puts anything in this Apparently goes to ice cream. Yeah, maybe I guess a little chunky monkey.

[:

[00:34:10] James: So, that's Olivia Colman, she is an Oscar winner.

[:

[00:34:15] James: Yeah, she's, she's a serious, serious, serious actress. Well, she

[:

[00:34:20] James: Awesome in this he's on the crown like that's the most recent thing. Okay brown

[:

[00:34:24] Chris: Wonka the

[:

[00:34:27] James: he's she's won some awards.

[:

[00:34:43] Chris: Form like when she won if I remember right I think when she like won her Oscar she got up there and was like Oh fuck, you know or something and

[:

[00:35:05] Phil: He is the civilian liaison with the Neighborhood Watch Alliance, Tom Weaver.

[:

[00:35:16] Phil: Third fun and game, on the beat, uh, Oh, oh, I couldn't understand why I wrote this down, but now I remember. I wrote down hot ass, not just hot fuzz. And I'm sitting here thinking, why would I write that down?

[:

[00:35:33] Chris: check out his horse. Yeah. Later in the movie. Check out Angels Horse. Check out his horse.

[:

[00:35:39] James: Yes. This movie I, I know we're gonna jump real quick, but this movie, everything that's set up in the first act is a complete mirror.

[:

[00:36:00] Phil: That's crazy. That's good. I mean, I, I need to watch this again. It's even the

[:

[00:36:08] Phil: run in there to help.

[:

[00:36:10] James: that's crazy. Yeah. So all this setup stuff, it all pays off in this movie.

[:

[00:36:26] Phil: No, never Never fired

[:

[00:36:30] Phil: No And we talked about this, or maybe we made reference to this when we talked about, did we ever talk about Axe Murder? We never did. No. But we talked about some part, because there's a, a scene similar to this in, in So I Married an Axe Murder when he's complaining about never hanging from that part of the helicopter, or.

[:

[00:36:57] James: the boss wants to, boss is [00:37:00] not yelling at him, an axe murderer. Right,

[:

[00:37:13] Phil: We, we meet more people from the plaque, Amanda Paver, headmistress of Sanford Primary, James Reaper, Brannigan Farm, Reverend Shooter, and Robin Hatcher, town doctor. This is the NWA meeting that I guess Angel goes to, to get maybe with them. I like how he gets all

[:

[00:37:37] Chris: Yeah. Like it's the reveals the living statue, but the X, like he gets all excited. He thinks it's something serious that the neighborhood watch is going to deal with. And then they reveal it's a living statue. He says, yeah. Angel's

[:

[00:37:52] Phil: Yeah, right. Homeowner's associations pull that shit all the time. That's why I refuse to live in a neighborhood that had one. That's exactly right. I don't want to mow my [00:38:00] grass. I ain't fuckin mow my grass, you know? Leslie Tiller runs the flower shop. She is not on the plaque, and I'm not part of the vigilantism.

[:

[00:38:23] James: so he can wave your baton about, or put the hat on.

[:

[00:38:27] Phil: And Tim Messenger is there. P. I. [00:38:30] Staker's missing swan. James had made reference to this. Piss, Piss Staker, come on!

[:

[00:38:40] Phil: come on. Oh my goodness. On patrol. A. Treacher. The man in the heavy coat in summer.

[:

[00:39:02] James: That guy's on Game of

[:

[00:39:05] Chris: He's the hound from Game of Thrones. Oh, he's real good. The movie was almost over before I rose. I was like, Holy shit. It was like one of those. I was like, that's kind of familiar, but just, and then also didn't occur. But I think they're fighting when it occurs to me. Holy shit.

[:

[00:39:19] Phil: Is it the, no,

[:

[00:39:25] Phil: too, but it's not, no, no,

[:

[00:39:39] James: And then later when they're chasing him, I couldn't see him. I'm not made of eyes.

[:

[00:40:03] James: Yeah. It's shocking.

[:

[00:40:22] Phil: Right. The shoplifter Skinner's Summerfield market Skinner again with the veiled veiled threats, I guess is when he's running first a slasher. [00:40:30] Okay, now, not advocating decapitate, I'm not advocating decapitation for shopping at the Mega Mart in Buford Avenue. Like, he's really pissed that people are going, and he makes all these references that he'd like to cut their heads off or something, you know.

[:

[00:41:02] Phil: Apparently they have something similar. It may harm your defense. If you fail to mention something you later rely on in court. So apparently if you don't. Say something now and then you rely on it in court later, that can be used against you, I guess?

[:

[00:41:23] Phil: So if you don't mention it now, then if you use it in court later, it could be a problem. [00:41:30] Yeah. All right. Maybe one day somebody from England will listen and chime in on that, help us out. The shoplifter is Pete Cocker. Aunt Jackie's sister's brother's boy. Yeah.

[:

[00:41:43] Phil: eyes!

[:

[00:42:04] Phil: Somethin You gotta ask me all these questions. Yeah, I can't remember. Danny? Danny Butterman, yes. Danny. Yes, Danny.

[:

[00:42:11] Phil: this movie so many times. Well, there are a lot of people to keep track of in this movie. There really are. Skinner doesn't want to press charges.

[:

[00:42:20] James: way the cookie crumbles. Another Oh, but they're crisps, aren't they?

[:

[00:42:31] Phil: Yeah. Yeah. Okay. There you go. Yeah. And then, and then what you guys were saying, chief butterman, I'll make sure everyone gets their just desserts. So they're all, there're always this foreshadowing that it almost like falls in line when you learn later.

[:

[00:42:46] James: He's eating ice cream or he is eating cake or what does he call it? A gto? Uh, yeah, chocolate GTO is a cake. That sounds right. It's like, yeah. He's got names for all these sweetss. Yes, just desserts.

[:

[00:43:05] Phil: Indiscretion. Indiscretion. Being locked up or being drunk.

[:

[00:43:15] Phil: Yeah. Speed trap. Never seen point break. Ever fired your gun up in the air and going, Ah, so this apparently is where.

[:

[00:43:27] James: And then he was like, I want to do what you

[:

[00:43:43] Phil: I guess they call them in England and girlfriend, Miss Eve Draper, who apparently is on the town council, quite the lady in the know because she is, I guess we'll learn later funneling information about the bypass and all that, right? Yeah, yeah,

[:

[00:44:03] James: He's like, light him up. He hits the lights and two seconds later they're pulled over. And that was like action, action, action, reducing the two seconds. Sure. And then Butterman's like, Oh, cause that, that is his, his life has just lit up tremendously.

[:

[00:44:23] Phil: Oh, again, then to the pub cops like to watch young lovers. Oh, the headline. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Cops like to watch young lovers. [00:44:30] Local Bobby gives thumbs up to teen suicide.

[:

[00:44:38] Phil: Another veiled threat from Skinner. I'm sure if we bashed your head in all sorts of secrets would come tumbling out after the show.

[:

[00:44:59] James: that is a [00:45:00] scary edit. Like when it just bum and it's their heads sitting on the ground, like, Whoa, that's a little hardcore.

[:

[00:45:14] Phil: Yeah. That

[:

[00:45:17] Phil: Okay. Yeah. Then she goes to kiss him and he's like,

[:

[00:45:31] James: Oh, really? Yeah. That movie. The why he's dressed like that and that weird stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.

[:

[00:45:39] James: didn't know. It's not even

[:

[00:45:41] Chris: Yeah, I guess the reason she had an actual gun

[:

[00:45:45] James: that's what they were doing. It was an homage of an

[:

[00:45:52] Phil: And then we get one of traffic collision. Collision. Collision. Yeah. You can't say accident means no one's to blame. What's her name? The [00:46:00] female Eve, Eve, Eve. Yeah. I've had my top off in his lay, on his lay by. Yeah, I guess they call that a convertible or whatever. And then she says, I've had my top off in his lay by.

[:

[00:46:20] Phil: Yes. Skinner knows the identity of the persons involved and he says news travels fast. Well,

[:

[00:46:36] James: Absolutely.

[:

[00:46:38] Chris: that. Yeah, because the next one I noticed there's something, I don't remember what the song is. Something about fire though, or burning or something after the house

[:

[00:46:54] Phil: Number 12, Elle Farm, Arthur Webley Hass been clipping hedgerows that don't belong to him. The farm in [00:47:00] question seems to be James Reaper's farm, Brannigan farm. Arthur has a permit for his gun for this one, for this one. What do you mean this one? Not his guns, nor the sea mine, but it's been deactivated.

[:

[00:47:29] Chris: they play when [00:47:30] they discover the, the bomb.

[:

[00:47:44] Phil: Yeah, like that same I did not pick up on that either.

[:

[00:47:48] James: That's crazy. Again, easter eggs everywhere.

[:

[00:48:12] Phil: Back to the pub, the doctor found no evidence of misadventure in the deaths of solicitor Martin Blower and councilwoman Eve Draper. Danny echoes Angel's ex saying he never switches off. So I guess, yeah, I guess they're talking about, I guess Danny says that.

[:

[00:48:35] James: Yeah, yeah, right. Right. Because he's blow off steam. Yes. And then that's when they start talking about movies. Yes. Right. You ain't

[:

[00:48:55] Phil: And for the good of humankind, that's a quote from angel. So that's what he believes the law [00:49:00] is and should be righteous and good and proper for the good of humankind, which is why he takes it so seriously. Danny and Nicholas bond over a drink and ketchup, you know, the, I think it's a good setup for

[:

[00:49:15] Phil: when he stabs him.

[:

[00:49:20] Chris: in his notepad. That says that this has saved my life more

[:

[00:49:34] Phil: More than one pint is consumed. Skinner and Merchant drink to Blower and Draper's demise. Yeah, so instead of drinking to their memory, he says, let's drink to their demise, instead of memory. I guess the millionaire guy is there. Blower,

[:

[00:49:53] Phil: Sauce. Yes. And then the guy says, Oh, he'll be in bits tomorrow, which is actually true.

[:

[00:49:58] James: goes, Oh, I think it's time for you [00:50:00] to go home. Oh no, sir. I'm not drunk. No, not you. Him. And he's pissing on the machine. Oh

[:

[00:50:17] Phil: I would not want to be him in the morning, enter the hooded figure. I like the

[:

[00:50:26] Phil: him. Yes. He walks in and

[:

[00:50:29] Phil: [00:50:30] home. Yeah. Nice match cut of Merchant being hit over the head, and Angel plopping down his chair at Danny's.

[:

[00:50:54] Phil: Uh, cut scenes of the hooded figure. Just dispatching merchant,

[:

[00:51:04] Phil: Yeah. . Yes, that's absolutely. Nice cut between it's about to go off and the explosion at Merchants. I guess the part a minute Danny says that it's about to go off Yeah And then the explosion the investigation of the merchant death when Doris says something raunchy But Vail Bob Walker puts a fine point on it.

[:

[00:51:29] Phil: Yes, he [00:51:30] did this time with the first hit with Blower and Draper I've had my top off in his late hit So we had talked about that and it's all about Timing with comedy. Cause that's just, you know, one word is, you know, Skinner again drives by the incident and angel for the second time has his spidey sense go off about him.

[:

[00:52:09] Phil: She's this, okay. The pig is on the spit roast. And she said, that's me after a couple of pints, assuming that yes, use your imagination, getting that's she's been around the office more than she's not ashamed. That's me after a couple of pints. Okay. Boy, [00:52:30] oh boy. Tim messenger talking to Leslie tiller and tiller.

[:

[00:52:54] Phil: Simon Skinner does not report to win his prize, has told people he had to run to the loo, bathroom. [00:53:00] But the hooded figure is making another appearance the next time. The next name is Tim Messenger, who will also be unable to report, and he is waiting on Angel, but something else beats him there. Tim, your number's up, he says, and of course it is.

[:

[00:53:19] Chris: Yeah. Sticks in there. And then he takes a couple of steps with blood squirting everywhere.

[:

[00:53:33] Phil: Angel is beating, Angel is, oh, okay. Angel is beating the murder drummer, Chief Butterman, and the others remain unconvinced. So Angel is still going on about. Something happening here, and they're just yeah, right, you know denying it for obvious reasons that we'll learn later now That's the fun in games and I have a midpoint at one hour and two minutes of essentially the two hour movie Is there anything else?

[:

[00:53:55] Chris: is after your, that's part of your

[:

[00:54:14] Phil: He's got

[:

[00:54:16] Phil: cowboy hat. Yes. Yes. And even Danny abandons him. Yeah. Not everyone is a murdering psychopath and he runs off. You don't know when to switch off, which is exactly the lesson he needs to learn. So I have that as a midpoint to false [00:54:30] defeat at one hour and two minutes.

[:

[00:54:34] Chris: later, like when he actually sees the floor is murdered, like he, he, he knows or feels like something is off. Right. And these people are being murdered, but he doesn't have any proof until he sees. That actually sees her getting murdered. Right. Then he knows, right?

[:

[00:55:01] Chris: Am I the only one that's, you know, am I

[:

[00:55:03] James: That's true, all that's lost would be him, him sitting there at the table going, she slipped and fell on her shears or whatever.

[:

[00:55:11] Chris: unless I, Got the order wrong. Then he confronts, uh, Skinner at the store and then the guy's got an alibi.

[:

[00:55:20] Chris: Yeah. So I had to,

[:

[00:55:34] Phil: The reporter uncovered something that George Merchant was developing. Big plans for Sanford merchant. I tried to follow this out. Merchant was a client and good friend of so of the solicitor blower Who was having an affair with Eve Draper who worked on the city council in the Department of Planning and Development?

[:

[00:56:14] Phil: Blower knows where the new pie pass was going because he was banging Eve Draper. Reporter Tim Messenger learns of this and informs Tiller that her land is very valuable. 10 times what merchant and blower offered her tiller then takes matters into her own [00:56:30] hands. And approaches the people that Blower, Merchant, and Draper have been talking to and sells it to them for her own negotiated price much higher.

[:

[00:56:59] Phil: [00:57:00] Yeah. And

[:

[00:57:13] Chris: Cause all that tracks, right? Like the writers had to come up with that. And at one point I wonder if. That's the way they were

[:

[00:57:23] Chris: let's be silly. Yeah,

[:

[00:57:29] Phil: things, yes.

[:

[00:57:32] James: couldn't have her going off and sharing her secrets of flowers with other people. Right. Gotta kill

[:

[00:57:53] Phil: Absolutely. The hooded figure can run. Skinner can run. As we saw at the beginning, Angel saw Tiller murdered, but [00:58:00] everyone is dubious to Chris's point. Angel says he knows who did it, Skinner. And then of course he has his alibi, but Skinner seems to have an alibi. Right. Alright, so that's that's where your midpoint is false and that makes sense.

[:

[00:58:31] Phil: So I'm just

[:

[00:58:43] Chris: I had that as the all was lost. Like when he realizes that the chief or whatever, Butterman is in, in on it too. Yeah. And he realizes the, the, what, you killed these people for no fucking reason?

[:

[00:59:10] Chris: Yeah. Cause yeah, he thought Danny was part of it. And Danny is the one that saves him, but he tells them, you know, come on, we can go back, we can do this together. And he tells them, forget it. Nicholas at Sanford, you know, and he leaves with his, you know, basically his tail, that was, that was lost to me. Okay.

[:

[00:59:26] Phil: Almost has to be. Absolutely. So I'm a little [00:59:30] ahead of that. In Despair, even Angel parrots this theory. Like you said, that's your, that's your bad guys. My Dark Knight is despondent. Even Angel goes off. Even Angel goes off to eat sweets. Cornetto.

[:

[00:59:54] James: did you have a brain freeze no no

[:

[00:59:57] James: it? He shoves the ice cream in his mouth [01:00:00]

[:

[01:00:02] Chris: back to the chief though and talks about you know It's more than one killer roola and then that's when the chief like he dismisses that by saying this is the same thing

[:

[01:00:10] Phil: Yes. Yes. Yes. Okay City where we're a crime,

[:

[01:00:15] Phil: right? Yeah, papa papa was onto it knee died Okay. Yes, okay. All right Back at the hotel, a hooded figure awaits. It's Michael Armstrong, aka Lurch, I call him that. Skinner, thinking he is talking to Michael, reveals his hand in it.

[:

[01:00:50] Chris: That's still bad guys. Cause I mean, yeah, it's there now they're attacking him. Right. He got close and then they attacked him.

[:

[01:01:19] Phil: So that's still some of your. That's not you were breaking the three then, right? Correct. That's

[:

[01:01:24] Phil: to all those laws. Yeah, it's when

[:

[01:01:29] Phil: [01:01:30] town. That's the third. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I saw maybe early on this then.

[:

[01:01:36] Chris: the movies. The Bad Boys 2 and Point Break and the gas

[:

[01:01:59] Phil: That's [01:02:00] it.

[:

[01:02:03] Phil: Yes. The town lost Village of the Year and it drove Miss Butterman insane, and she committed suicide. Chief Butterman swore he would make Sanford great again. I guess his wife Committed suicide because they didn't win village of the year. Yeah, they lost

[:

[01:02:25] Phil: This will be this will be early But my high tower surprise is chief [01:02:30] butterman is involved in all of this and so is it seems is Danny angel fleas and discovers the underground Depository of all those wrongdoers now dead Danny appears to try and kill angel, but alas He is still on Angel's side, just doesn't think they can do anything about it.

[:

[01:02:48] James: hmm. Yeah, I was thinking, during all the Storm the Castle stuff later, that I'd, I'd struggled for the Hightower Surprise. I don't think we're there yet. Okay,

[:

[01:03:04] Phil: I think it's when the,

[:

[01:03:08] James: That would be gathering a team. You got the team before you storm the castle, right?

[:

[01:03:14] Chris: storms it. He doesn't have a team. He storms it by himself. No, they go to

[:

[01:03:21] Phil: Yeah. Then they go fleas the thing to get up all the, yeah. The high tower surprise is usually a setback. Yeah. Well,

[:

[01:03:37] Chris: Well, I was thinking, I guess I was going to use the high dose prize because the team surrounds him and Danny along with dad and you think they're done.

[:

[01:03:58] Phil: They all work together from that point. Yeah, [01:04:00] they go to

[:

[01:04:05] James: Skinner jumps out the window with Butterman and they go. Okay. That would be the Hightower surprise. All right. Okay. Because it's setback, they're escaping

[:

[01:04:21] Phil: So, yeah, so I'm early because I have my finale is that whole shootout instead of the storming of the, or the break into three, I guess. Okay, so I'm, I'm just early on these. [01:04:30] He arrests James Reaper and kicks Miss Reaper in the face. Oh

[:

[01:04:39] James: Oh yeah? Like who? Farmers. Who else? Farmer's mums. And that's it. Farmer's mum is who he kicked in the face. Ah,

[:

[01:04:48] James: pack. Everybody and their mums. Farmer's mums. I was like, holy. Again, that's the first bit of the mirror image of everything you're about to

[:

[01:05:04] Phil: And a horse and some graffiti artists. Those on the plaques are not amused. Danny sees Angel and finds new inspiration. Check out Sergeant Angel's horse. There you go. And I wrote down literally one of the greatest street ads of all cinema. Yeah. It's right up there with heat.

[:

[01:05:25] James: It's just bouncing off things. It's a great action [01:05:30] movie, but it's not realistic whatsoever. They fire a lot

[:

[01:05:44] James: and then the other sergeant, the one that's been incompetent the whole time comes up with a plan.

[:

[01:05:58] Phil: all the way around. Now [01:06:00] working, working the way up the chain, fight with Michael, the two employees in the meat section, the cashier, and then Danny and Angel go after the big boss. So Typically, you work your way up the echelon to the big boss.

[:

[01:06:09] James: forgot about the other one when she takes out the, the girl, little girl on girl action.

[:

[01:06:25] Phil: Swan! They, they finally see the swan. Aaron A. [01:06:30] Aronson callback. What is

[:

[01:06:45] Phil: little kid. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't want to miss that.

[:

[01:06:51] James: Yeah. Cause of his dad. Yeah. Yeah. He was going to shoot his dad, but then he fired the gun in the air. Yeah.

[:

[01:07:01] James: Uh, well, no, that you forgot the, the Skinner when

[:

[01:07:05] Phil: Oh my God. That is gruesome. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It really

[:

[01:07:09] James: if I think I could be wrong, but that was the 'cause that was a miniature of their city. You're right. Oh,

[:

[01:07:17] James: that he pushed off to kill Messenger. That's, so that's desserts. Just desserts

[:

[01:07:22] Chris: I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I guess what it made me think of is there. Fighting like in the, in the town or yard, right? In the rain. Yeah. [01:07:30] Yeah. That's only the weapon. One ends. He's fighting the bag in the water, in the rain, you know, cause there's the busted fire hydrant

[:

[01:07:37] Phil: I did not pick up. It's

[:

[01:07:42] Phil: Only people who would, who love that genre would put such care into, right. You know, uh, my final image is one year later.

[:

[01:07:58] James: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. [01:08:00] And to kind of step aside, a lot of people like police officers and people in that lifestyle love this movie because it actually shows paperwork being filed out. Oh yeah. You can't do these things without, you know, a considerable

[:

[01:08:13] James: be here all night.

[:

[01:08:20] Chris: about that guy They

[:

[01:08:23] James: Yeah. Oh In the office and then the mine goes off. He shoots

[:

[01:08:30] James: Okay for the fact that Danny can be shot by a blunderbuss at five feet away Then a sea mine go off and explode the whole building.

[:

[01:08:40] Phil: Well, that's, that's, that's the whole trope of Last Action Hero, you know. Exactly. Yeah. Takes paper towels and wipes off all the tar.

[:

[01:08:54] James: Everything's the same. Right. It's

[:

[01:08:56] Chris: do like how you think it, that Danny's dead or whatever. That was reminiscent of We [01:09:00] The Women to me too, bringing the flowers to the grave at the end.

[:

[01:09:11] Phil: Him and Danny. Yeah, and he has

[:

[01:09:23] Chris: they show that

[:

[01:09:27] Chris: at the beginning.

[:

[01:09:29] James: Or [01:09:30] they tell him we have a lovely cottage for you in Sanford Glacier. Sorry. And he gets there and the cottage is not ready and he has to stay at the hotel. Yeah. All right.

[:

[01:09:40] Chris: Got it.

[:

[01:09:51] Phil: No, no,

[:

[01:09:54] James: they're very lovey dovey towards each other.

[:

[01:10:17] Phil: you saw that

[:

[01:10:20] Chris: Like I thought they were playing it for, for laughs, I guess. Oh yeah. The. You

[:

[01:10:24] Chris: I don't know how to turn it off. I can show you.

[:

[01:10:41] James: it could be, it could be like Lebowski.

[:

[01:10:44] Phil: Well, that's what I'm saying. It's absolutely, uh, and it becomes just us, but, uh, yeah, I was a little early on some of the beats. I think you guys have nailed it as far as that goes. Oh, we can't all

[:

[01:11:01] James: For sure. But he would have a damn good

[:

[01:11:12] James: out of the Cornetto trilogy, this one's my favorite. Shaun of the Dead would be right under it.

[:

[01:11:17] Phil: I've seen it once. I don't think I have, but this is my favorite. Yeah, it's a pub crawl. You don't know. Yeah.

[:

[01:11:29] Phil: we did see [01:11:30] that. We saw it. We saw it. It wasn't them. It was. With I can't remember their names now the end of the world where

[:

[01:11:41] Phil: end Yeah, yeah

[:

[01:11:47] James: Yeah, and then so Edgar Wright movies This one's the best. Yeah, absolutely. Baby Driver's really good, if you haven't seen Baby Driver. I've never seen Baby Driver. I like that one. Last Night in Soho was pretty okay, pretty good. Is that like a Murder [01:12:00] Mystery one? Yeah, Murder Mystery Through Time. Oh, okay.

[:

[01:12:13] Phil: best. Then the hot fuzz is amazing. And what you're saying

[:

[01:12:21] Chris: Yeah.

[:

[01:12:43] James: They tell you that. Yeah. And then the rest of the movie happens and it happens exactly the same way again, where, you know, Joe gets kidnapped or something drops off at the exact same time, every it's really, really good.

[:

[01:13:01] Phil: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's I love

[:

[01:13:06] Phil: favorite. All right. Any thoughts anymore, Terry, or we're about to head into pass consider. That's it. Okay. Let's do pass consider. Recommend.

[:

[01:13:43] Phil: Yeah,

[:

[01:14:04] Phil: It's, it's a long movie, but you're never bored, but it is a long movie.

[:

[01:14:08] Sherry: that's not why I fell asleep was because of the movies. Because I started it like at 11 o'clock. Yeah. It's too late.

[:

[01:14:17] James: Absolutely. Recommend. One of my favorites. Perfect

[:

[01:14:21] Chris: Yeah, same

[:

[01:14:28] Chris: those that I've changed my [01:14:30] mind on because the first time I saw it I was like, yeah, really?

[:

[01:14:40] Phil: threw me off the first me to me too And then when

[:

[01:14:51] Chris: So I don't want to own this, so I'll rent it. And shit man, like, I was five minutes into it and I'm like, I should have just bought it. This is way better than I remember.

[:

[01:15:10] Chris: horror.

[:

[01:15:11] Phil: what is going on? Right, right. And then you add other viewings. I love the shit out of it. Right. It's

[:

[01:15:26] Phil: It's not. Not at all.

[:

[01:15:28] James: He's a bad speller. [01:15:30]

[:

[01:15:49] Phil: I watched,

[:

[01:16:09] James: It's a flip cartoon.

[:

[01:16:14] James: It's a guy walking and then a car comes and runs him over back and forth. So it's just like a blood spat.

About your hosts

Philip McClimon

Profile picture for Philip McClimon
Philip A. McClimon is an author who likes to write about the end of the world (post apocalyptic, Sci/Fi), mostly because he thinks the shopping would be awesome (No crowds, everything free). He likes heroes that are the strong, silent type and not necessarily male. By silent he means up until the time there is something snarky to say, usually before, during, and after doing something cool.

He writes Urban Fantasy under the name Billy Baltimore for no other reason than that he likes the name. Many of the same rules for his other stories apply to Billy’s, strong silent types, smart mouth, does cool stuff, but these stories take place in a made up town called Hemisphere and involve stuff you only ever hear about on late night conspiracy talk show podcasts, which are, if you think about it, pretty awesome too.

So, that's Phil. He's not strong, rarely silent, and isn't known for doing a lot of cool things.

But his characters are.

Sherry McClimon

The wife of Philip McClimon. Probably all that needs to be said. She is responsible for his bad behavior not being worse than it is. She is concerned that her mother might listen.

James Harris

Profile picture for James Harris
James Harris is a tech guru and musician extraordinaire; he also loves movies. A pretty decent guy all around.

Chris Sapp

Profile picture for Chris Sapp
Chris Sapp has been a friend for a lot of years and a writer for a lot more. An encyclopedic knowledge of story and movies, he can take you on a deep dive into script and screen. Another pretty decent guy, which are the only kind allowed around here.
